Police first were called to the scene for narcotics activity. Shooting suspect surrendered

12:30 a.m.: A man believed to have shot six Philadelphia police officers has surrendered to police. The standoff lasted more than seven hours, and was ended when a SWAT team member fired a tear gas canister into the house just after midnight. The suspect walked out and was apprehended by police.

The suspect has not been identified by police. NBC10 has footage of the surrender.

10:00 p.m.: Police Commissioner Richard Ross and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney held a press conference. Ross said police able to speak to the shooter on the phone, and all hostages have been safely released. The hostages were released by SWAT officers without the suspect being aware, Ross said.

The suspect remains barricaded in the house. Police are unsure whether or not the suspect is injured, but believe he is not.

Ross also said some of the injured officers have already been discharged from the hospital.

“It was a narcotics warrant that went awry almost immediately,” Ross said. “It’s nothing short of a miracle that we don’t have multiple officers killed today.”

Mayor Kenney called for an increase in gun regulations and gun control legislation.

“Our officers need help. They need help with gun control, they need help keeping these weapons out of these people’s hands,” Mayor Jim Kenney said.

9:38 p.m.: The two officers who were previously trapped inside the house have been safely evacuated, and it is no longer a hostage situation. The suspect is still in the house, however, and the standoff continues.

8:14 p.m.: Police say there may be more than one shooter. Police say additional suspects are in custody, and that one suspect in the house is handcuffed, though there is still at least one active shooter.

8:08 p.m.: Police have also confirmed that the officer shot in the head only suffered a graze wound.

8:00 p.m.: Police commissioner Richard Ross confirmed that six officers have been shot, but they are all expected to be okay. He said police have tried to call the shooter, but the shooter has refused to answer at least twice. Three injured officers are at the Temple University Hospital; the other officers have been sent to Einstein Medical Center.

Mayor Jim Kenney gave his wishes to the officers in the shoot out. “God bless them all,” he said.

7:46 p.m.: SWAT officers have beaten down the door with a door ram and entered the house.

7:36 p.m.: Police say that two officers are now trapped inside the house. Officers are still trying to communicate with the suspect. The shooter is still firing, though there had been a period of approximately 40 minutes where no gunshots were heard.

6:34 p.m.: According to police, one officer is trapped inside the same house as the shooter.

6:19 p.m.: Police say that one officer has been shot in the arm, another in the leg, and a third officer in the head. However, the injuries are still believed to be non-life-threatening.

New reports say that the incident started when a narcotics officer tried to serve a warrant to someone on the block.

Police have confirmed that everyone at a daycare close to the shooting is okay.

The shooter’s wife may be sharing a Facebook live stream, according to the police scanner.

6:08 p.m.: A sixth officer has been injured in an incident involving a motor vehicle. Police said a pedestrian was also injured.

6:00 p.m.: Police say the remaining suspect is believed to be male.

Speaking to WCAU, a witness described the scene as being “like a war.”

“Like the scenes that you see in war. The guns, the fire, the noise. It was like bombs going off simultaneously at a time where people are having dinner,” she said.

According to Sgt. Eric Gripp the suspect is still firing. Gripp also asked the media to stop broadcasting officers’ positions, implying that the shooter is monitoring the coverage.

5:51 p.m.: The shooting has been confirmed to not be on the Temple University campus, but at a house nearby.

As of 5:30 p.m. EDT, shots are still being fired. Police say that the shooter is still in the Temple University building, and the gunfight is still going on. People are being evacuated from their homes.
