Unlike other sports trophies, champions only get to keep the Stanley Cup for one year after they win. The NHL assumed control of Governor General of Canada Lord Stanley Preston’s Cup in 1927; from 1893 to 1926, it was awarded to the Amateur Association of Canada’s best team.

Every member of the team that wins the Stanley Cup gets his name inscribed on the trophy. The barrel’s bands are placed in the Hockey Hall of Fame when there’s no more room to add names. In 1919 and 2005 the Stanley Cup was not given out, for very different reasons. An influenza outbreak caused the cancellation of the 1919 season, and a player lockout canceled the 2005 season.
