The biggest of these is probably House of Gucci, the true crime fashion drama starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver. The latter is already hotly tipped for an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and has already been making headlines for her relentless lobbying campaign.

For families, Disney has released Encanto, its latest animation, this time set in a magical neighborhood of Colombia, and with music from Hamilton creator Lin-Miranda.

For art house lovers, there is the latest movie from Paul Thomas Anderson, as well as critical darling Drive My Car.

Films Coming to Theaters This Thanksgiving

Encanto

Disney’s latest animated movie focuses on a super-powered family living in a charmed place in the hills of Colombia, with songs courtesy of Lin-Manuel Miranda. Encanto features an all Latinx voice cast, led by Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz. (November 24)

House of Gucci

Just months after his The Last Duel flopped, Ridley Scott is back with a whole box of wigs and a lot of broad Italian accents.

The House of Gucci tells the story of a murder plot within the fashion family, starrring Lady Gaga as “Black Widow” Patrizia Reggiani alongside Adam Driver, Al Pacino and Jared Leto. (November 24)

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

The seventh film in the Resident Evil series (based on the video game franchise) is a reboot of the franchise.

Milla Jovavich is out, but The Maze Runner’s Kaya Scodelario is in alongside Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Hannah John-Kamen, The Flash’s Robbie Amell and The Umbrella Academy’s Tom Hopper. (November 24)

Drive My Car

A Japanese film that has been picking up awards at most major film festivals, including best screenplay at Cannes.

The three-hour Japanese movie is based on a Haruki Murakami short story, and tells the story of the making of a bilingual version of a play of Uncle Vanya, as well as the relationship between an aging actor in that production and his driver. (November 24)

The Humans

Based on a Tony-winning play, The Humans features a starry cast that includes Amy Schumer, Beanie Feldstein, Steven Yeun and Richard Jenkins.

The story takes place across an evening where a family has gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving, and where tensions are going to come to a head. (November 24)

Licorice Pizza

The ninth film by Paul Thomas Anderson, previously of Phantom Thread, There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights. Licorice Pizza stars Cooper Hoffman, the son of frequent PTA muse Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as a young man coming of age in 1970s Los Angeles.

Starring alongside is Alana Haim (of the band) as his love interest, as well as Brradley Cooper, Sean Penn and Tom Waits. (November 25)

Writing with Fire

An Indian documentary Rotten Tomatoes calls “stirring and inspiring,” which takes us into India’s only newspaper run by Dalit (lower caste) women, Khabar Lahariya.

After airing in theaters, the documentary is coming to PBS in March 2022.
