If you’ve been following my Twitter profile lately, you’ll have noticed I’ve tweeted several different transfer targets that I would sign if I were the big AW. Guys like Simeon Jackson, David Hoilett, Seydou Doumbia, Vagner Love, Xherdan Shaqiri and Matias Suarez to mention a few. What my selections highlight is the very issue we seem to have, more specifically, management has.

Who will complement, and be capable of filling in for Van Persie? Will they gel with the rest of the team quickly enough? Do you break the bank or bring in a diamond in the rough? Do you go for for pace, power, trickery, work rate, all of the above, a combination? How much time left again?

My point is, the market is an unforgiving place. You buy a player, he flops. That’s too bad, maybe you’ll be able to sell him next time. What could be the cost of buying one player but missing out on the other? As circumstantial as this statement can prove, one player can often make or break your season. Imagine if Man City had this Carlos Tevez debacle, and hadn’t signed Sergio Aguero? Where would Newcastle be without Demba Ba? If AW thinks that we can sign Henry and everything will be 2004 again, then he needs a wake up call. Whether it’s a bank breaker or an exciting youngster (Benik Afobe anyone?) Not even the King can save us single handed.

I’m not completely for signing a superstar striker as other teams have done, but we need some cover. The defense doesn’t worry me as long as we don’t sustain any more injuries (fingers crossed…) I’m happy that Coquelin can finally get a run of games, albeit not in his preferred position, but he’s doing a great job wherever he needs to be placed. funny how whenever we seem to be in crisis, a start emerges. Anyway, we’re good at the back. We need a striker.

Out of all our rumored targets, I’ll be the first to day that Alexandre Pato will never join us, so get it out of your heads, you poor Gooners. I too am misty eyed about the pacy Brazilian, but things are a little more complicated than we would like. He’s expecting a baby soon, and with the club owner’s daughter no less. Firmly crossed off, then. Other names seem more plausible, but we’re going to have to open our cheque book rather wide to get them, which we all know Le Boss is reluctant to do at the best of times, and I don’t see another 8-2 in our future.

All in all, resigning Henry is a good start, but Mr Wenger has some serious business to conduct this January, otherwise we’ll be in for quite the uphill battle to bring in a trophy.
